What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is offered by private insurance companies contracted with Medicare. Plan options and benefits vary by location and eligibility.

When Can You Enroll?

Enrollment may be limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period or are within your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from January 1 to March 31 and is available only to beneficiaries already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Special Enrollment Examples

You may qualify if you are turning 65, new to Medicare, losing employer coverage, recently moved, or meet another qualifying event.

Medicare Enrollment Information

Enrollment in Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans is generally limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or are within your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During AEP, eligible Medicare beneficiaries may review their current coverage and, if they choose, enroll in, change, or disenroll from a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan for the upcoming plan year.

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from January 1 through March 31 each year. During OEP, individuals currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan may make one eligible plan change in accordance with Medicare rules.
